Back to Haiku Heights today. The prompt is “Xerox.” Two attempts…

Hey Karin, trying to write a response haiku to yours and finally just gave up. Gist of mine is to remember the alleged wisdom of an article that I’m currently working on, which is to be careful of referring to copyrighted names as if they’re in the public domain. In this case, the prompt might be “Xerox,” and you don’t directly mention the term in your haiku, but “Xerox” is copyrighted and many of us use it every day for “photocopying” just as we use “Kleenex” for “tissues.” Nice haiku, anyway. I have more of a beef with the overuse with the word “horrific,” which I noticed being thrown around after the September 11th, 2001 disasters and which journalists have had a hard time finding any other word to plug into their articles since. Why not “horrible” or “awful” or “terrible” or “distressing” or “gut-wrenching” or any other more interesting adjectives? But any time disaster hits our coutry, it’s “horrific.” Go figure. I guess my next tummy ache will be horrific. But I promise you I won’t Xerox it. 🙂
